Description
Svensk Glasåtervinning AB (Swedish Glass Recycling) is the only glass recycler of packaging glass in Sweden. The Company was founded in 1986. In 1994, the Swedish Parliament passed a law on producers' liability for packaging. Svensk Glasåtervinning AB was given the responsibility by the producers, which where the owners of the company, to develop a collection system and a recycling plant. From 2024, the Swedish municipalities are responsible for the collection of all packaging, including glass. PRO:s handles the financing of the collection and Svensk Glasåtervinning is now solely a recycler of glass containers. The glass collection system involves some 5000 recycling stations from north to south. Collection is about 200.000 tons per year with a collection rate of almost more than 90% and a recycling rate above 85%. In Sweden all the glass is transported to the plant of Svensk Glasåtervinning AB in Hammar, 250 km west of Stockholm, the only recycling plant for packaging glass in the country. The manufacture of new glass containers is the main area of use of the recycled glass, mainly by the glass manufacturers in Scandinavia but also in the rest of Europe to some extent. Insulation is also an important area of use. Lightweight foam glass from the neighboring company Hasopor is another application for the recycled glass.
